I enjoy trying different training methods to see how I respond as an athlete and also understand what athletes I coach may be experiencing within the workouts I prescribe. Studies are performed to find what may be the best training approach for athletes. I do not think this question will ever be fully answered since we are all so different and complex. Sleep, motivation, life stress and many other variables will always enter into the equation, so I think the best training comes from day to day adjustments and listening to our bodies.
